Feel Fall Comfort With Mini Apple Crisp Pies #BornOnTheFarm

Quick, what do you think about when I say fall/autumn? The first thing that comes to my mind is comfort. And, comfort to me is food. Growing up my grandma made the most amazing Apple Crisp. Anytime I smell apple cinnamon (candles, incense, or even air freshener) I think of my Grandma and her apple crisp! She would make it all the time for our Sunday family dinners, but mostly in the fall when apples were the most delicious, and juicy!

It was my all-time favourite when I was a child, and as I grew up. When I was 19 both my grandparents passed away within a week of each other. This was one of the most difficult times in my life, even after the death of my mother when I was 16. Grandparents just make you feel safe. Comfortable, loved. They make you feel like you have nothing to worry about, and everything no matter what is going on will be okay. I was very close to my Grandparents, and even to this day it pulls my heart strings to think about them and share memories with my kids. I would give anything to have them in my kids lives, but sadly they only met my oldest a few times before they passed away.

I’ve tried to keep their memory alive and of course part of that, aside from telling my kids stories, having photos up of them, and talking about them often I try to do my best recreating my Grandma’s amazing apple crisp. Although it’s not quite the same, it’s still delicious and brings back all the memories I had as a child!

Mini Apple Crisp Pies Recipe

APPLE PIE SHELL CRUST:

  • 2 ½ cups all purpose flour
  • 1/8 tsp salt
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 8 ounces cold butter (salted or unsalted, I used salted)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 dash of cinnamon
  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Place oven rack on lower 1/3 of oven.
  2. Combine flour, salt and sugar. Add cold butter slices and mix until your dough resembles cornmeal.
  3. In a small bowl, whisk together the egg, cinnamon and vanilla. Add egg mix to flour and kneed until it forms a ball.
  4. Roll dough out on floured surface and use cookie cutter of your choice to cut out your dough.
  5. Place in non-greased tins (I used pot pie tins) push against the tin to make the shells
  6. Use any left overs to make a little cut out for the top of the pies
  7. Move to steps below

APPLE CRISP FILLING:

  • 6 peeled, small diced apples
  • 1/2 tsp white sugar
  • 2 tsp flour
  • 1/2 tsp flour x2
  • 1/2 cup flaked oats
  • 1/2 1 gay lea butter stick (proportioned), chunked
  • 1/2 cup dark brown sugar
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  1. Peel, and dice very small into chunks apples
  2. Sprinkle white sugar and 1/2 tsp flour over apples and mix well
  3. Sprinkle with cinnamon, again mixing well
  4. In separate small bowl mix dark brown sugar, flaked oats, 1/2 tsp flour. Fork 1/2 cup butter chunks in the mixture and mix well until very course
  5. Place apple crisp filling into uncooked pie shells, and sprinkle with brown sugar mix topping.
  6. Add your little cut outs to the top
  7. Bake for 40 minutes, or until pie shell is golden brown.

Ready for the afters? I’ll admit, I don’t make these very often but when I do we have guests over, and those guests LOVE these as desserts. In the fall if you are looking for a good, comforting dessert to your fall entree these are what you want to serve! They are tasty, fresh and scream fall.

When the fall weather rolls around I want comfort food. I want feel good, never be hungry, always feel comforted food. Apple Crisp is one of those things that does that for me. So today, I’m sharing a little twist on Apple Crisp and making Mini Apple Crisp Pies! Although my recipe isn’t exactly like Grandmas apple crisp, there is one thing I cannot change that she did and that was using real butter. Gay Lea Salted Butter has just TWO ingredients Cream (Milk) and Salt, Pure and Preservative-Free, For use in cooking, baking, frying, or spread over crunchy vegetables.  Want your Apple Crisp to taste like crisp, fall heaven? Use real Gay Lea butter. For this recipe I used the salted butter sticks.

Available only in Ontario and packaged in convenient quarter sticks to make it easier to portion for baking or cooking this butter is perfect to cut down your prep time and not have to stress over measurements, as the package tells you exactly how much and where to cut if you need to cut it! It’s really great, and convenient. Although this may not be grandmas apple crisp, this is an amazing take on it and it’s a big crowd pleaser! Delicious, Easy and best of all? It’s got that wonderful taste of fall comfort we all look for this time of year!
