Once upon a time ago I put a lot of faith in the education system. We’ve had a really rough go with the education system in this city and unless we move back home, I don’t think there will be a time I have a 100% faith in a schooling system again unless it’s my own.
This means I have to do my extra part (meaning; even more than us parents usually do) at home to ensure my kids are learning to their full potential. My focus today is on my three youngest sons; Jayden, Jackson and Justin.
They are 7, 5 and 3. I want to make sure they have a decent start and so far, with the school they are in they aren’t really getting what I would call the best. Jackson started 2 mornings a week a different school to help him with his speech and it’s really helping him a lot but I want to make sure his word association is where it should be too. Jayden isn’t reading as well as he is suppose to, even though we’ve always worked on it with him so I felt like I needed to come up with a solution that could be fun and beneficial for all three boys, Justin included as in September he will be starting school too.
So I sat down and wanted to do something fun. Something fun that would make learning something what it once was, full of potential and wonder. I want my kids to want to learn and doing it the old way just doesn’t work anymore. I have always been a visual learner and I am pretty sure my kids take after me too. So, I came up with this pop up word and photo association game!
I made a printable – free and easy to do. Usually I’m a photoshop girl, but I made this in PicMonkey (it’s free and easy!) so you can too, or I will have this available to print yourself too!
It’s super cute and the idea behind it was — one of my older kids would sit down with a littler kid and hold up a word. They’d say the word once, and the younger child would have to look to find the correct photo to go with the word — then spell the word out loud. Little did I know this would become a huge hit in my house, so much so my kids said I had to share.
I decided to do something that was quick and easy, and colourful. I find if its colourful no matter what it is they all want to get in on it. Here is what I used to make these fun little popups!
- Colourful Paper Straws
- Card Stock Paper
- Fun Bug and Word Printable (available below)
I found the paper straws on clearance at Walmart for $1.50 so I bought a couple packs to do fun crafts and have for some recipes. The card stock paper is also from Walmart and was $12 for 200 sheets. I highly recommend having both on hand because you just never know when they’ll come in handy.
I highly recommend having card stock because its so much stronger than normal printer paper and makes these type of crafts easier, and they last longer too.
It’s been really fun to watch and even play with them. Jackson has so far played more times than I can count and I’m pretty sure he will be spelling all the words in no time, with no help! He’s 5 and loves learning so I knew this would be a hit with him. When they are so eager to learn and have a fun, exciting and safe place to do it they really jump at it!
Jackson even loved taking turns and picking words for his sister to find the match to. She also didn’t mind because she remembers last year his teacher had mentioned how much she would appreciate her helping her little brother since our family is so very close and thinks he would really learn from her — I think she’s right.
The good thing about this little pop up game is that its simple enough for 3 year olds and 5 year olds but it’s also a lot of fun for the older kids to get involved, and have them all play together nicely. Sometimes that can be a chore in a house full of kids of many different ages and maturity levels. Especially if they are a little behind on some things in school like reading and spelling. This will help a ton! You can also change it up and instead of having the word of the bug, maybe use words that can be associated with the bug like – buzzzz for bee, and web for spider, etc.
