I don’t know about you but I am always and forever losing my lip balms. I buy them every time I go to the store, especially in the winter months because my 5 year-old Jackson has really dry lips, so bad that they crack so I am always trying to keep them hydrated. Well, every single time I buy one — I lose 2. It’s like a vicious cycle that never ends.
I decided that I am no longer wasting money. Even though I can get cheap ones at the dollar store they add up really quickly! I am done, so I decided I was going to make my own. I had a friend back home who always made her own so I wanted to give it a try. She used bees wax but because I was rushing and wanting to do this as a little fun project when the boys of the house were at an event, we left the bees wax out (I couldn’t find it on my quick trip to the dollar store or Walmart, ugh!)
I picked up most of my supplies from the dollar store. I decided to try a couple different things for colour, but because my main focus is hydrating Jackson’s lips, and so my girls can have some extras laying around I wanted to keep it really simple.
The supplies I used:
- Pure Petroleum Jelly — $1.25 (I had a bigger one on hand but purchase this in case too!)
- Hawaiian Punch Singles — Red and Purple — $1.25
- 3 packs of 8 Storage Containers — Didn’t have any screw tops, but I ordered some for making more — $1.25 per back
- Skinny Sticks – To mix and transfer balm — $1.00
- 3 Pack – Wilton Shimmer Dust — light pink, yellow and orange which I already had these on hand, I believe they were $5
Although I did buy the purple (grape) Hawaiian punch singles it didn’t work. It turned out grey and I didn’t like the look of it at all so I scrapped that, and instead subbed in Blue Kool-Aid.. I think the colours turned out super nice, and because there is only 2 ingredients it was really easy to make.
I found the ones I used the shimmer dust for worked out way better in colour and texture than any of the juice crystals I did use, but they all work just the same and work amazingly well.
To make: Take 3 tbsp petroleum jelly and sprinkle on juice crystals or shimmer dust — the amounts vary by what colours you want, and how dark/light. I used very little for the blue and decided to go a little more with the other colours. I think they turned out really well.
Once you sprinkle on the crystals mix really well until completely resolved and smooth. Note: the juice crystals I had to use a splash of water in a separate bowl before adding in the jelly. It helped bring out the colour as the blue was a white powder, and the red although red — wasn’t as deep as I wanted it!
Once transferred into your jar (I used little bead jars from the dollar store that have a push top. I will use the screw top next time!) place on a plate and in the fridge to firm up. I placed mine in the fridge for 3 hours and once I took them out they were the consistency I was looking for. I put mine in the fridge without the lid so I could be sure they firmed up how I wanted, then put the lids on after. (note: you could leave the fridge step out for a softer balm!)
The juice crystal balms have a nice light scent while the shimmer dust have none. They all have the same consistency and although they firmed up in the fridge — the heat of your finger rubbing will make it soft for your lips. They are really awesome. I used to just put petroleum jelly on Jackson’s lips because they were so sore and cracked, anything else would “sting” so I’m happy to report these don’t give off any sting, and he enjoys putting on the blue one!
My boys were so excited when I said I was making them as part of girls day with my girls but were really concerned with the colours. The red gives off a slight tint when applied but all the others go on nice and clear. Hydrating lips and keeping them silky smooth.
I will be making more of these, and continue to keep a stockpile. I made 24 for under $10 — they came to $6.75 and it took us less than 5 minutes to make all. Add in the time in the fridge and all ready to go in 3hrs 5 mins. Not bad! So worth it to a family that buys them and loses them all too often. Plus, us girls had so much fun making them for our girls day while the guys were off on an adventure for the day!
