As most of you may know if you’ve been following along with the blog for very long, my mom passed away when I was sixteen years old when she was just forty-eight. I had sixteen Mother’s Days with her, and I will always cherish each and every one that I did get to spend with her. But, Mother’s Day is hard. It’s a rough day for me even though I have been lucky enough to have seven amazing kids of my own and this year marked fourteen Mother’s Days I’ve gotten to celebrate but, there is always something looming over me on this day, and that is the fact my mom isn’t here to celebrate with me.
Over the years it hasn’t gotten much easier. I do however make sure to remember her on Mother’s Day and make sure I talk about her a lot so my kids who never got to meet her, can hear stories and share some memories I do have of her.
Hugs are imperative. I’ve always made sure to hug my kids tightly from birth on up. Mother’s Day is no exception. It may be a day for Mother’s, but I wouldn’t be a mother without my kids after all so that day belongs to them just as much as me, so I take advantage and get lots of hugs in on Mother’s day. Spend the day enjoying the fact you’ve made tiny humans that look up at you and are so thankful for you every day.
If you are a new or expectant mom and wondering how your 1st Mother’s day will go, I can assure you – it will be an emotional one. For me, my first Mother’s day after welcoming Jordan I got a card in the mail from my sister in law, signed by “Jordan” and it brought me to complete tears. Mother’s day is tough for those of us who lost our moms, but having kids of your own not only puts things into perspective but it makes you cherish what you had, and what you do have.
Suggestions For 1st Mother’s day:

- Hint About a Spa Day: Want to focus on YOU for Mother’s day (as you should!) suggest you’d like a prenatal or postnatal massage. It’s something I did shortly after having my 1st, and it was much needed.
- Do Absolutely NOTHING: Sit back, put your feet up and enjoy your day. Hug the ones you love, indulge in your favorite foods and treats, and just enjoy yourself!
I am so grateful to these seven little humans that make me the mother I am today. People think I’m nuts for having so many or wanting more, but the truth is – nothing compares to being a mother. Nothing can replace the fact I lost my mom so early, but experiencing motherhood has helped bring me a little bit of closure and contributed to making that day slightly easier year after year although still tough.
Whether you are celebrated the fact you are expecting, or it’s your first mother’s day, or fourteenth, it’s a special one and the day is yours! Enjoy it, and enjoy them — they grow so quickly!
