Value Village has always been a family favourite choice for all of our holiday needs, especially Halloween! As a kid I remember going to Value Village often to get decorations, and costumes for the holidays! Although my mom worked so very hard and I always had everything I needed we couldn’t ever afford to go out and spend $40 on a Halloween costume especially one I would only wear once because I never stopped growing!
So, when my kids were all born we tried the big box stores for costumes and eventually we were spending upwards of $300 for costumes, and ones that never lasted. They’d rip really easily, we’d have to buy a size or two up because we’d have to make sure the kids had warm Canadian winter clothing under their costumes and they’d grow out of the before they’d ever be able to play dress up with them again. Sure, some of the kids could pass their costumes on down to the next child but they never lasted long enough to.
Last year we decided enough was enough and off to Value Village we went. We spent less than $200 on 5 Costumes and the kids looked fantastic. 2 years ago I went there to find something unique for Justin as he was just turning 1 and I found him a homemade R2D2 costume, talk about a great find!
This year it was no question! Off to Value Village we went. I was really surprised to see the closest store to me fully stocked with new and used costumes, but also costumes exclusive to Value Village. The exclusive costumes really caught my eye. The price was just right, the quality was beyond my expectations and the choices were endless!
The used costumes or thrifty finds as I like to call them were pretty great! I was having a ball going through them all and the possibilities are endless when you want to create your own style. Mix and match little pieces and you can create a look no one else has, which is really what I did with my costume too!
We had a little boo boo when we first got to Value Village. We had left our diaper bag at home that had my camera, money, gift certificates and diapers for the kids so while I shopped with the little ones, my husband grabbed a taxi home to pick up the bag and rush back to us. By the time he got there I had all but 1 costume in my cart for everyone! I even picked out two costumes for him, both of which I didn’t think he’d ever wear but I thought I’d try. After 11 years together he has never dressed up for Halloween, and I thought the kids would really enjoy it. This is one of the costumes I chose, and he ended up going with…
No, your eyes are not deceiving you that is my husband dressed up as everyones favourite Purple Dinosaur, Barney. What a find this was. We found it in the selection of used costumes they had, and let me tell you – Justin my 3 year old had an epic laughing fit when he saw dad trying this one on — we knew we had to get it!
The selection for kids was beyond my imagination. I couldn’t choose at first but grabbed what I thought would be perfect for each kiddo. I even got myself the perfect costume, and I cannot wait to dress up this year! I was able to find 3 costumes in the used costume section for the kids, 2 in the exclusive to Value Village and mine? Another fabulous exclusive, only available at Value Village. Look at these amazing finds:

Of course, This year I had to mix and match. My costume came with the belt/sash but nothing else so I grabbed the hat (another exclusive to value village, the accessories you can only get there were incredible too)! And I think it came out great!
Isn’t it just lovely? I can’t wait to sport it to the kids school on Halloween and also out trick-or-treating! I think its great for just 2 months postpartum with baby #7!
While at Value Village waiting for my husband to arrive back after our boo boo, I spoke to a lovely worker at Value Village. She was admiring the baby, who was in the middle of a mini meltdown because she needed to be nursed (which I was kindly told I could use a change room if I wished to have privacy — yay, thanks Value Village!) and we got to talking about costumes, she let me know that the selection they carry has thousands of brand new and thrifty costumes – Value Village has exclusive costumes which are custom made to fit many body shapes with elastic waist bands and flattering lengths. These exclusives costumes and accessories are not available anywhere else!
All of the costumes we got totalled $172 — a HUGE difference from years past. This year we even bought costumes for my husband and myself, something we never do plus with a new addition we had to get Hanna her first halloween costume too! So, 9 costumes at $172 — SCORE! You can’t find that anywhere else!
