Encouraging your kids to be physically active can be like playing tug-of-war with a giant. But there are ways that you can trick the little ones into taking a more active role in daily activities, allowing them to move around more and staying healthy. So here are some neat little ways you can get your kids to peel off that couch and get active fast.
Run and Jump in Leaves
Most of the time video games are bad when kids play for too long, but there are some ways to get kids to go play outside when it gets a bit chillier – leaves! Having them gather leaves into a pile and run to jump in them is the ultimate fun for kids. You can also get your yard tidied up this way too, win/win.
Dance While You Do Chores
Say housework and they freeze, but if you blast on some really cool music, preferably something they listen to and not something from the 50s, you can get them to clean to the beat of the music, because no one said you can’t move your hips and swing your arms around while you tidy up your room or sweep the floor.
Walk The Dog Together
Dogs love to walk, run, and jump, and your kids are like sponges. Whatever they see, they do. Besides, pets are fun, so they won’t even noticed that that walk around the block was a ruse to get them off the couch. And if you go with them, you can control the speed of the walk, so they can burn more calories.
Have A Sibling Competition
Your kids are always telling each other, “Anything you can do, I can do better”. Now let them prove it. Throw a bunch of Legos throughout the house, and have them pick them up. Whoever gets the most pieces, wins a prize, like a trip to the movies, a cheap toy, or immunity from a chore like washing the dishes that week. Kids are greedy, use it to your advantage!
Install A Basketball Hoop
Encourage them to play some hoops by installing a basketball hoop in the backyard, or in the front yard above the garage door. This way you can play along with them, or have them play with some friends from school or the neighbourhood while they burn off some steam.
Turn Errands Into Competition
The key here is to get tricky because if your kids smell something fishy, they won’t do it. So next time you’re walking home with them or heading to a nearby grocery store, have them compete with their siblings to see who can run the fastest, or dare them to beat you to the front door… even if there are still 8 more blocks to go!
Create A Tour
Take your bikes out and start exploring your neighbourhood. You’d be surprised at some of the things you’ll see that you’ve probably missed while driving with your car. Not only are you and the kids getting the exercise you need, but you get to find some cool new stores or eateries along the way, and they’ll never realize that you just tricked them into exercising.
