Hug Them Tightly: Today is Global Hug Your Kid Day #NoBabyUnhugged

Disclosure: This post is sponsored by Huggies Canada. I am a Huggies #NoBabyUnhugged Mom. As always, opinions are all mine.

Over the last few months I’ve written about the power of skin-to-skin hugs when your baby is fresh in the hospital, but what about after you get home and are settled? It’s just as important to hug them tightly and make sure those first few days home is just for enjoying your new little squish.

Today is Global Hug Your Kid Day! I am lucky and have seven kids I get to hug anytime I want to, and believe me when I say I hug them every single chance I get. When Hanna was brand new, and we got home I was sure to enjoy skin-to-skin with her every chance I got as well because not only is it extremely beneficial but it also helped with her low blood sugar she was experiencing at the hospital due to my gestational diabetes. We did skin-to-skin whenever we could!

Skin-to-skin hugs are a great way to end each diaper change. In fact, the average child requires up to 5,000 diaper changes in their little lifetime – that’s 5,000 opportunities for hugs!

Skin-to-skin hugs are important for many reasons. Emotional and Physical.  Over 600 medical studies have shown that the effects of human touch are proving what us moms have always known; Hugs are so imperative. Not only are they vital to the healthy development of a child but the benefits of human touch also extends throughout childhood. For babies, skin-to-skin helps to promote more stable heart rate, improved oxygen levels, more stable body temperature, improved pain tolerance, improved sleep, faster weight gain and also, healthier brain development – you can learn more here.

Hanna was one of those babies for the first few days home we had to strip down to her little diaper to wake her for feedings and burping sessions. This was a great way for us to have a lot of skin-to-skin time because it also kept her awake to feed, and change!

Little Snugglers Diapers + Natural Care Wipes are what we have been using for Hanna and because a diaper is on your baby all day long, every day and night, nothing is more important than how it feels against your baby’s skin. Since baby is only wearing a diaper during skin-to-skin hug time, you want to make sure it’s the RIGHT diaper that helps keep their skin clean & healthy.

Huggies® is constantly innovating to bring comfort and protection to your baby. Huggies® diapers offer outstanding skin care and are designed to let your baby’s skin breathe.

I’m feeling especially emotional after this weekend. I suffered a miscarriage, and although it’s a sad time and my heart is aching I can’t help but feel blessed with my babies I do have here on earth with us. I can’t gush enough about each and every one of them, but Hanna being our Rainbow Baby, I made sure to do some things a little differently with her. Making sure she was hugged more than enough was a priority to me.  Like I mentioned we had to strip her down to her diaper most feedings for the first week as we were on a strict schedule with feedings to make sure her blood sugar was stabilized.  I will also admit, I didn’t want to put her down ever because it was a miracle she was even with us. I had suffered 2 miscarriages one at 6 weeks and another at 8 weeks the two cycles prior to conceiving Hanna and I never thought we’d be able to have another one, but here she was as perfect as can be.

Looking at all my children I know some people wonder how we could even want more, but truth is, my children are why I want more. My children are my life and my light. I still have so much more love to give and as we will continue to try for number 8 (who will be our very last) I will continue to hug my babies tightly, and cherish every second of every day I get to spend with them.

Hugs are so special no matter the age. Hug your children tightly, and enjoy Global Hug Your Kid Day! I know I sure will!
