Philips LED Lighting for The Perfect Homework Nook

Disclosure: This post is in partnership with Philips Canada. As always, opinions are all mine.

As parents, our main goals are to raise happy, healthy, and well-adjusted children. One of our big concerns in our home with our children is their eyesight. My husband has always had issues with his eyes. He has had glasses since he was 4.5 years old (bifocals at that!) so it’s always been a concern for us where our children are concerned and two of our children had to have eye surgery at young ages (2 and 4 years old) because both of them had been blessed with his eye issues and both had lazy eyes that turned in. Their eyes also needed strengthening so both are in glasses for life (or until old enough for contacts!)

So, you could imagine how important it is to us to have the proper lighting for them in our home so they can read, watch tv, do homework and function without having to put too much strain on their eyes.

Up until recently, our home has been the absolute worst for lighting. I struggle to take a single good photo in our house, and for me to work comfortably I have to sit in our kitchen by our big sliding glass doors that open to our backyard. Otherwise, I end up with headaches. Want to know a secret? All my bright photos are taken outside even in -21 winter weather. That’s how bad my lighting in my house is. I have been meaning to look at a site to find Electricians in Nichols Hills, or a service a little closer to me, to come and fix this awful lighting but just haven’t quite had the chance to!

So, when I was contacted to work with Philips LED Lighting I was ecstatic. Philips has been a household name in my family since I can remember and I knew I wouldn’t be disappointed. This was also the perfect time to finish the homework nook I had been wanting to complete for our kids for a very long time now.
Our house is very dark and where our homework nook is located has no windows. Our homework nook is located in our basement right at the bottom of our stairs. We put three bulbs in the light fixture down there and no other lighting is needed. It lights up the room with a soft white light that is perfect for reading and doing some homework.
Philips Lighting, the global leader in lighting, has designed LEDs that are easy on the eyes, In addition to being comfortable for the eye, LEDs have a long lifespan, which means an average of over a decade of energy savings that help save the environment, too. Something I feel very strongly about and am happy to have in my home.

People are always looking for small, easy ways to improve their own well-being but may be missing something right in front of their eyes – their lighting. There are a lot of LEDs on the market, but they are not all created equal. Choosing the right light bulb may not seem super important, but when you think about it – the lighting in our home is something we are exposed to every single day, so don’t you want the very best?
Giving my kids space they need to complete their homework comfortably is a big deal to me, and having Philips LED lighting in their space is also reassuring. I don’t have to worry about them and now I am content that they can get their work done comfortably and without irritating their eyes. As the world leader in lighting, Philips Lighting commissioned global research. Key findings include:

  • With children spending a significant amount of time under bright, artificial light, eyesight is the top concern of parents when it comes to their child’s health and well-being as well as their academic performance.
  • Parents take a keen interest in their children’s eyesight with over half (52 percent) worried about how well they see/their eyesight closely followed by school performance (51 percent), stress levels and mental health (50 percent) and sleep (49 percent).
  • Over two thirds (68 percent) of parents believe that quality lighting is vital to a child’s performance at school and almost all parents (96 percent) believe that it is important for their child to get natural daylight.
  • In an average day, children spend just over four hours a day under bright artificial light and three hours in front of a screen. With Philips LEDs, children can concentrate on reading and study with less risk.

My kids are enjoying their new homework nook. Jayden has taken a keen interest in reading in the nook and this is a big step for him. I believe it has a lot to do with the fact the lighting is much better in this area and he can sit back, read comfortably and not have to take breaks to rub his eyes or adjust his glasses.
We are now considering changing every light bulb in our house over to Philips. We have already changed quite a few to Philips LED to be easier on the whole family and our eyes, and what a difference. I’ve already noticed fewer headaches and less straining on my eyes myself, and being someone who works on a laptop day in and day out — this is important!

For those interested I got the Philips LED 60w Replacement bulbs (9.5w LED) soft white light. Which is also dimmable warm glow (a great feature for my dining room!). These bulbs are said to last 22+ years, and 25000 hours. These bulbs also have a 5-year limited warranty.

Philips LED light bulbs are created with families in mind and designed to provide lighting that is comfortable to the eye. Be sure when you are choosing light bulbs, you are choosing the best product made for you and your family!
