Growing up our parents are our idols. I remember looking at my mom while we shopped thinking, “who is this goddess who doesn’t have to pay for our items? How is she my mother?” as she’d swipe her credit card, sign her name and off we went. “How is she so important we didn’t even have to pay for what we bought?” I would think to myself, thinking that cash was the only way to pay. Well, then I grew up and now fast forward to 25 years later and I own my own business, have my own family, and my own American Express Credit Card! I now understand the world of credit cards, and I like being in control.
I’ve always tried to explain the concept of money to my kids, and the amazing feeling you get when you earn it for yourself. I had jobs before I had children but then took a very long break. I didn’t have much credit because all of our bills were in my husband’s name, and it wasn’t until 2013 when I decided to open Six Time Mommy that I really got it in my mind to make this into a business and share my voice with you all. Then I started to build my credit from scratch. I started off earning a small income, but within a year I was bringing in quite a bit. I now even have a credit card with my business name on it, how cool is that? Of course, I need to be careful. After all, credit card chargebacks can be quite costly to small businesses, so I need to keep an eye on when this happens. Still, I’ve come all the way to having my own business card, all the way from wondering if my small business should even accept card payments and having reading into informative posts such as this article here for the pros and cons.I wanted to get my first credit card but didn’t know which one would be best so I went online to compare credit cards but in the end I decided to get my very first credit card with RBC back in 2015. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve misplaced not only my credit card but my wallet! I once even dropped my wallet out of a shopping bag. By the time I got home and realize it, I ran back, but of course, it was gone. I felt sick to my stomach. Was someone using my cards right now? To make matters worse we were moving in a week and I needed my credit card for our move – How was I going to pay for the movers? Or the moving truck? I had to call my credit card companies in a panic and cancel every card. Half an hour later, a knock on our door brought an older lady who found the contents of my wallet, sans wallet and returned it all to me. Someone had stolen my wallet but left all my cards and personal belongings behind. But, now I had to wait 5-7 business days for new cards to come in the mail.
Now if something like this were to happen again, I wouldn’t end up in a panic. Why? Because RBC is putting the control into the hands of clients by enabling them to lock and unlock their credit cards through the RBC Mobile app. Credit card controls allow RBC Mobile clients the freedom to place or remove a temporary lock on their credit cards with a simple action, without making a single phone call.
This is life changing. What if you just misplace your wallet? Or you leave it in a friends car? Or on the train during your work commute? You don’t have to pick up the phone and cancel your cards. Temporarily locking them until you find them is a much better option, and you can control if you unlock or keep them locked and for how long. If it turns out your card is gone for good, or someone happens to take them – you can still cancel, but lock them right away for peace of mind.
The How and the Why with RBC App and Credit Card Controls
How does it work exactly? You can lock your card if you’ve misplaced it, or if you’re traveling without it. Simply log in through the RBC Mobile app and navigate to the account details page of the credit card you wish to place or remove a lock from. Click the “lock” button to lock or unlock your card and that’s it.
How will it benefit you? While the credit card is locked, purchases and cash advances are blocked, while payments, refunds and preauthorized charges such as subscriptions and bill payments will be processed as usual, giving you peace of mind, and control over your card. Talk about a lifesaver. Do you know how hard is it to cancel a card, wait for a new one, all the while preauthorized purchases are being declined? It’s stressful, and let’s face it, a hassle. Now with the RBC Mobile app and credit card controls, you don’t have to go into panic mode and cancel everything right away. Especially if you are like me and misplace things often only to find them a short time later. Once you cancel your credit card you cannot get it back, so this is a temporary solution with many benefits.
RBC is digitizing the everyday banking experience through the RBC Mobile app and credit card controls is just one of the services that help make banking more simple for clients.
